So today’s the day I officially kick-start this project. I started off the most obvious way: I googled “how to crack the OSCP exam with no experience in ethical hacking”. After going through several search results, I came upon a blog post by John Jackson (also known as Mr. Hacking) that seemed promising. The post was titled The Ultimate OSCP Preparation Guide [DEPRECATED] (link: https://johnjhacking.com/blog/the-oscp-preperation-guide-2020/). I know it says “deprecated” and was written like 4 years ago, but I feel that the part where he talks about how to begin preparing for the certification is still pretty relevant.
According to him (and a bunch of other articles I read online), one needs a basic background in networking and security fundamentals to make this journey a little easier in the long run. And since John seems to be an authority on the subject (the guy even has a Wikipedia page to himself, come on) I’m going to follow his advice and do just that.
He recommends taking Udemy courses for CompTIA’s Network+ and Security+ courses, or watching youtube videos on the subject by Professor Messer. I had already purchased CompTIA Network+ (N10-008) Full Course & Practice Exam by Jason Dion on Udemy a year ago (never started it though, classic me) so I think I’ll start with that. As for CompTIA’s Security+ course, I’m planning on buying CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) Complete Course & Exam by the same instructor on Udemy sometime in the near future (It’s not on sale right now, but Udemy keeps having sales, so I’m gonna wait until it is slightly cheaper).
Because I know myself and my tendency to procrastinate, I am going to give myself a deadline to finish these two courses. I think 15 days to finish each course should be sufficient time. Today is July 2, 2024, so my plan of action is going to be:
– CompTIA Network+ —> Finish by July 17, 2024
– CompTIA Security+ —> Finish by August 1, 2024
On a side note, John Jackson has also written a book called Corporate Cybersecurity: Identifying Risks and the Bug Bounty Program. I’m for sure going to read it sometime, so I’ll add this to a separate section of the website called “Books”. I’ll keep adding to this section as I come across more interesting sounding books, so keep a lookout for that!
See you guys tomorrow!
